Relocating from the U.S. to Sydney – When Buying Isn’t an Option

Client Profile

A professional family relocating from the United States to Sydney with their young family. Their initial plan was to purchase a home before arriving — until the foreign buyer restrictions put a pause on that strategy.

The Challenge

With the foreign buyer ban in place, purchasing a property in Sydney was no longer an option. The family now needed a high-quality rental in a short timeframe — ideally one that aligned with their lifestyle preferences, schooling needs, and commute requirements. But searching remotely from overseas posed obvious challenges.

Our Approach:

We shifted gears quickly and took the stress out of the rental search by managing the entire process on their behalf:

  • Area Expertise: We introduced the family to key neighbourhoods across the Eastern Suburbs, helping them understand the differences in community vibe, school catchments, transport options, and local amenities.
  • On-the-Ground Inspections: We previewed and inspected several rental properties on their behalf, sending detailed videos and honest assessments to guide decision-making.
  • Securing a Home: After narrowing the shortlist, we found a beautifully presented rental in Woollahra that ticked all the boxes — character charm, walkability, and proximity to work and schools. We negotiated favourable lease terms and supported the family through the rental application process.

Ongoing Support:

Our relationship didn’t stop at the lease signing. We’re now delivering our expat liaison service, assisting with:

  • Coordinating international furniture shipping, setting up utilities – internet, electricity
  • Providing tailored checklists to ease the transition
  • Being their local point of contact ahead of (and after) landing

Outcome

The family is due to arrive in Sydney shortly, confident and well-prepared. Their new home is ready and waiting — and they’ve already got boots on the ground taking care of the rest.
